The Endocrine System

The endocrine system is a complex network of glands that produce and secrete hormones to regulate body processes, including metabolism, growth, reproduction, and mood.

  • Gland: An organ that secretes chemical substances.

  • Endocrine Gland: Ductless glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream.

  • Hormone: Chemical messengers that travel through the blood to target specific cells/organs.

Mechanism of Action

  1. Hormone Reception

Hormones only affect "target cells" that possess specific receptors for that hormone. This is often called the "Lock and Key" mechanism.


  1. Feedback Loops

The endocrine system is largely controlled by Negative Feedback. When a hormone level rises to a certain point, the gland is signaled to stop secreting, maintaining homeostasis (e.g., blood glucose regulation).


Important Comparison: Nervous vs. Endocrine

  • Nervous System: Rapid, localized transmission via electrical impulses.

  • Endocrine System: Slower, widespread transmission via hormones in the blood, often with longer-lasting effects.
