Every day, invaders (bacteria and viruses) try to break in. Luckily, your body has its own security team
ready to protect you.
Skin = The castle walls (first line of defense)
White blood cells = Security guards
Antibodies = Special weapons made to attack a specific invader
Memory cells = The security camera system that remembers every criminal who has entered before
What is a pathogen?
A pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease.
Examples: bacteria, viruses, fungi and protoctists.
Pathogens carry antigens on their surface. Antigens act like an ID badge that tells the immune system that the pathogen is foreign.
How does the immune system protect us?
Antibody production
Phagocytosis
Antibody production:
White blood cells detect the foreign antigens.
They produce antibodies that fit the antigen specifically.
Antibodies destroy or neutralize the pathogen.
Memory cells remain in the body for years and respond rapidly if the same pathogen enters again.

Phagocytosis:
The white blood cell finds a pathogen.
It surrounds and engulfs the pathogen.
The pathogen is trapped inside a small sac.
Enzymes break down and destroy the pathogen.
The white blood cell moves on to find more invaders.

What is a vaccine?
A vaccine is a safe training session for your immune system. It contains dead pathogens, weakened pathogens, or harmless parts of a pathogen (antigens). It teaches the immune system to recognize the pathogen without causing serious disease.
How vaccination works
Vaccine enters the body.
Antigens trigger antibody production.
Memory cells are formed.
If the real pathogen enters later, antibodies are produced quickly and the disease is prevented or reduced.
Why is vaccination important?
Reduces the spread of disease.
Protects vulnerable people.
Creates herd immunity when many people are vaccinated.
